A Beautiful Mind

I watched A beautiful Mind on Sunday and was totally sucked into the movie... No wonder it won the Acadamy Award for best picture. The show's about John Nash who's a great US mathematician who was awarded a Nobel Price for his endeavours in Economics. It's sad that such a brilliant person would have schizophrenia. It's really difficult to overcome this disorder... I respect that! Well I was quite interested in his work... So I did a little research and found the Nash equilibrium. This can be applied to the Prisoner's Dilemma which gives a senario...

Peter and Paul are arrested for a joint crime of serious fraud. They are given 3 alternatives. (1) They both say nothing but there is enough evidence to sentence them both to 1 year's imprisonment. (2) They both confess and get 3 years each. (3) Either one of them confesses and tt person will get a reduced sentence of 6 months while the other gets 10 years jail time. So let's consider Peter's dilemma. He could confess and get a short sentence (6mths). This is better than not confessing(1 yr). A safer approach would be to confess and get no more than 3 yrs just in case Paul confesses and Peter gets a longer sentence(10yrs) if he didn't confess. Now Paul has the same dilemma. So if they had colluded, they would get the best possible solution. Tt's impossible cos they would be seperately interrogated. If they are both selfish and confess, they both end up getting relatively long terms(3 yrs). Hence, in the context of a beautiful mind, if the guys in the bar were selfish and go for the blonde, they would not get the desired result. She and her friends would ignore the guys. If they didn't make a move on the blond, her friends will be picked up by other ppl and she would be desperate to find a guy. Eureka, a nobel winning theory. That guy is a genius!!!

Back to reality... Man... SOV's over... Semi retirement stage already... Haha fellow yr 2 choir members we've been through a whole lot action... If there was a limit, we probably surpassed it by now... It has been an honour being able to sing in VJC choir for these 2 yrs! No Man Is An Island!
